Scrapbook, 1778, 1863-1885, includes biographical information on Upson, his family, numerous obituaries from Coldwater and Adrian (Mich.), correspondence, and newspaper clippings. There is a certificate of his being named Attorney and Counselor of the U.S. Supreme Court, 1864. Also, there are passes for Washington, D.C., 1863 and 1869, a $8 U.S. bill, 1778, and a Port Huron and Western Railway pass, 1881. See also the Perrin Smith Business Records in the Clarke Historical Library. Smith and Upson were business partners in their firm, Smith-Upson, 1851-1856.

Upson was born March 19, 1821 in Connecticut and died in Coldwater (Mich.) on Sept. 5, 1885. He graduated from Yale, moved to Mich. in 1845, and was admitted to the bar in 1847. In 1873 he was 1 of 18 commissioners to revise the state constitution of Michigan. He held various local political and judicial positions. He served as Senator from the 17th District, 1855-1856, from the 10th District 1881-1882, U.S. Attorney General, 1861-1863, and as a member of Congress 1863-1865 and 1869-1871. (For m...
